Today, it was unexpectedly cold. A little refreshing, probably the last cold snap of the season here in NYC. Maybe another hot summer in the city?
The Holland Tunnel is reported closed. Two fires nearby... one building is 7 stories, filled with Freon, and expected to collapse soon. Stay tuned.
It's Sunday night and the Macco Truck building next to the Holland Tunnel is still on fire. At noon I saw a huge wall of flame shoot out of the roof. By 8pm, the JCFD tore half the building down, the other half still burning.
A wall of black smoke is still pouring out, blowing east into the Hudson River. Tomorrow's commute should be interesting.

Tower of Lights turned off early
Going downtown on the 3 train? Why tell us that we're going Express from 42nd st to 34th? There's only one stop!
I take the PATH train home, lucky me got a seat. I'm tired.. the day job has me pretty beat, and yet again the updates to the Transitcat database slip another day. I still have the routings from last summer there! Better days those were, before Hell came to our doorstep.
Looks like they turned off the WTC Towers of Light memorial early tonight: 10:30pm. Ditto for me. Maybe this weekend the Cat will be a few steps closer to reality. Anybody reading? Let me know what's still wrong or broke if you see something. The Wiki's a good place to add notes.
Low clouds hang over the city as the WTC Tower of Lights memorial shines its twin beams into the sky.
From the kitchen window I watch the beams as they shine through the clouds before meeting in a final, brilliant ball that flickers and shifts in the wind-swept clouds.
They were clouds like these that hid the ground and the water from view when you looked out the windows from the WTC, with only the lights from the other tower to keep you company.
They will turn the lights off soon. It's 10:45 pm, and heavy clouds have now completely obscured the lights.

Tower of Lights
Best place to see the Tower of Lights? My vote is for Exchange Place, Jersey City, though I haven't checked the view from Hoboken Pier A, Pavonia/Newport, nor Liberty State Park. (Unless you live there, stay away from Pavonia/Newport because construction is a mess there.) At least in Exchange Place, you can take some small comfort in the pace of construction up and down the Hudson.
Maybe while you're there, take a look at the statue at Exchange Place (bring a flashlight), spend 60 seconds of your day to read the inscription, and think about your freedoms while you look at the twin beams of light of the WTC Memorial.
